Barack Obama’s plan to combat climate change and invest in long-term energy efficiency is what makes him the greener candidate in this year’s presidential election. You can read about his plans for the environment here. Sarah Palin said herself in the VP debate that the Republican energy motto that she and John McCain support is “Drill baby, drill”, referring to drilling for oil in the Gulf Coast and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. This is just a temporary solution for a much larger problem. Not only is it just evading reality, but it will also keep contributing to pollution and global warming. The intelligent, responsible answer is to invest in alternative energy such as wind, solar, and other renewable sources.
Obama in the second presidential debate: “Senator McCain talks a lot about drilling, and that’s important, but we have three percent of the world’s oil reserves and we use 25 percent of the world’s oil. So what that means is that we can’t simply drill our way out of the problem. And we’re not going to be able to deal with the climate crisis if our only solution is to use more fossil fuels that create global warming. We’re going to have to come up with alternatives, and that means that the United States government is working with the private sector to fund the kind of innovation that we can then export to countries like China that also need energy and are setting up one coal power plant a week.”
No matter which candidate you choose, don’t forget to vote on November 4th!
